The WTA Future Stars is an engagement platform aimed at encouraging young boys and girls throughout Asia-Pacific to live a better life through sport. Through tennis, the goal is to inculcate in the next generation the importance of living a healthy lifestyle, teamwork, discipline and focus which will build strength in character that will benefit them both on the tennis court and in life.

As part of the program, the WTA Future Stars Tournament gathers some of the top juniors from the region to compete during the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, with the final being played on Center Court. These aspiring U-14 and U-16 players will compete against some of their best peers in the region and also enjoy the opportunity to watch the biggest stars of the WTA in action.

The WTA Future Stars also features a grassroots development initiative to introduce the sport to less privileged communities throughout Asia-Pacific. WTA Future Stars Clinics have been conducted in China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand and the outreach continues to grow.

WTA Future Stars Junior Race To Singapore: Philippine Qualifiers

WTA Future Stars Junior Race To Singapore: Philippine Qualifiers

The WTA Future Stars tournament is held yearly in conjunction with the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. As part of the program, top U14 and U16 female tennis players from 21 countries around Asia-Pacific are provided valuable experiences and exclusive insight into the world of professional women’s tennis.

As September came to a close, the Junior Race to Singapore concluded in Philippines. Macie Carlos and Bliss Bayking emerged as the champions of the U14 and U16 qualifying events. They have been awarded the privilege of representing Philippines at the WTA Future Stars event at Singapore in October.

Philippines Qualifiers 1

Macie Carlos is the No.1 U14 junior in the Philippines. She tells the WTA Finals team that she became inspired to play tennis after watching a match on television. It was also then when she decided that she wanted to become a professional tennis player on the WTA Tour and eventually win Grand Slams.

She looks up to Naomi Osaka, her favourite tennis player.

“Naomi stays humble and works hard. She’s achieved incredible success despite being only 20 years-old,” says Carlos. “I hope that I can be like her and achieve that level of success one day!”

When asked what about tennis she loved, Carlos revealed that it was the dynamic nature of the game that kept her in the sport. She enjoys how no two matches are ever the same and how there are limitless possibilities and options during each point. It keeps her engaged and always on her toes, trying to come up with better and more effective strategies.

It is only two weeks before the start of the WTA Future Stars event and Carlos hopes to make the most of every day. She says that it’s a great honour to be given the chance to represent the Philippines at the WTA Future Stars event. She promises that in the meantime, she will be diligently working on improving her groundstrokes, increasing her accuracy and pace of her shots.

Philippines Qualifiers 2

“I can’t believe that I qualified for the WTA Future Stars event this year! It was my goal for 2018 and I’m so glad that I made it,” Bliss Bayking told the WTA Finals team, unable to contain her excitement.

Bayking told the WTA Finals team that she is excited to watch the Top 8 women play matches and hopes that she will get a chance to meet them. She is also excited to meet girls from around the region and hopes to make lasting friendships during the WTA Future Stars event.

It’s hard to imagine that a few years ago, Bayking almost walked away from the sport. She confessed that when she was younger, she did not enjoy the sport and wanted to quit tennis to explore and pursue other interests. However, her grandfather insisted that she continue with tennis and Bayking begrudgingly continued. It was only much later that she developed a passion for the sport which she attributes has led her to be the successful player that she is now. She is appreciative of her grandfather’s actions and acknowledges that tennis has taught her the value of hard work and sportsmanship.

For now, Bayking is working hard to become a better tennis player and plans on participating in more International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments. Soon, she will start sending out applications to colleges in the United States, where she hopes to clinch an athletic tennis scholarship.

The WTA Finals team would like to congratulate Carlos and Bayking for qualifying for the WTA Future Stars event this month and wish them both the very best of luck in their training in the coming weeks.

The WTA Future Stars event is held in conjunction with the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global. Catch the WTA Future Stars U14 and U16 Finals on 21 October before the opening ceremony of WTA Finals for free. Click here to get your tickets to the WTA Finals.
