On Wednesday, in the first doubles match at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, they caused the first upset, knocking out last year's runners-up, Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina.
While Kudryavtseva and Rodionova have been racking up the wins in recent weeks, their No.4-seeded opponents arrived in Singapore short on wins. This lack of match sharpness came back to haunt them as they slipped to a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 defeat.
"Every tournament we play from now on we're going to win," Rodionova said before the match. "I mean, seriously, it's unrealistic to say that, but that's the intention. That's how we're going to go and play the tournaments."
Kudryavtseva and Rodionova are appearing at the finals for the first time and never looked entirely settled in the first set. However, after breaking to move ahead midway through the second they settled into the task at hand, taking this set before rattling through the final four points of the decisive match tie-break.
Things will not get any easier. In Saturday's semifinals, they will come up against defending champions Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, who began their defense with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph over Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro.
