WTA FUTURE STARS SHINING IN CAMBODIA

The WTA Future Stars program has been shining across the Asia-Pacific, and Cambodia is looking ready to join the nations who will battle it out in Singapore in October.
Eighteen markets in the Asia-Pacific were invited to take part in the 2015 WTA Future Stars program, hosting Under 14 and Under 16 qualifying events in the hopes of sending their best young players to the WTA Future Stars event at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.

It's the Junior Road To Singapore - it's powerful, it's inspirational, and it's now in Cambodia. The Tournament Director of the WTA Finals, Melissa Pine, recently visited the Southeast Asian nation to help Tennis Cambodia develop WTA Future Stars, and was more than impressed with what she saw.

"It is great to see so many positives in Cambodian tennis," said Pine, who visited several orphanages and conducted tennis clinics with the kids. "I'd like to see more girls playing, and I'm really touched by the work Tennis Cambodia is doing in its grassroots development, especially in the six orphanages."

Some of the kids who took part in the orphanage clinics were so determined to learn how to play tennis that it didn't matter to them that they had no shoes or socks - they hit the courts barefoot.

"They were so happy and smiling and really inspired by the tennis," Pine described.

"Tennis is a platform to build a better life. It provides these kids with confidence, camaraderie, and something to strive towards - it was really touching."
