More qualifiers for the Future Stars event at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global have been confirmed with Nepal hosting their regional qualifying event. Mahika Rana will represent Nepal in the U16 competition, while Ira Rawat will compete in the U14 division.
Rana is currently 14 years old and is ranked No.3 in Nepal's U16 rankings, where she's reached the No.2 ranking. She played her first International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior event this year at a Grade 3 event in India and aims to play more in 2015. She has played in other international competitions in Vietnam, Thailand and Bangladesh. Her career goal is to be a professional tennis player and got a taste of that when she represented Nepal in the 2014 Asian Games.She says that Singapore is her favorite city to visit and she is excited to qualify for the Future Stars event and interact with the WTA's best including Serena Williams, her favorite player.
Raway is only 12 years old and is ranked No.1 in Nepal's U14 rankings, while also ranking as high as No.2 in their U16 standings. She has also represented Nepal in international junior competition in India and Thailand and she was also a member of the Women's team at last year's Asian Games. She is also excited to meet the World's Top 8 at the WTA Finals, saying "I feel very grateful to have seized this wonderful opportunity and I'll make the most out of it. I'm very excited to represent my country and meet the top 8 women in the world, including Maria Sharapova." Her ultimate goal is to keep becoming a better tennis player and bring top tennis to Nepal.
The Future Stars program features competition for young girls across the Asia-Pacific region with a vision to promote high-level athlete development, health, fitness and empowerment of women through tennis. Eighteen markets in the Asia-Pacific were invited to take part in the 2015 WTA Future Stars program, hosting Under 14 and Under 16 qualifying events in the hopes of sending their best young players to Singapore.
