FUTURE STARS FOLLOW UP: KARMAN KAUR THANDI

Catching up with Karman Kaur Tandi, the inaugural U16 Future Stars winner at the 2014 WTA Finals.

In April, we shared that Karman Kaur Thandi, the inaugural U16 Future Stars champion from last year’s WTA Finals, was selected as a reserve for India’s Fed Cup team. Though she was never called to represent her country, Thandi has kept busy on the court achieving career high rankings.

In the past 12 months, Thandi has reached three $10,000 International Tennis Federation (ITF) tournaments, while qualifying for another three $25,000 tournaments. She is currently ranked No.795 in the WTA Singles Rankings, while she sits at No.935 in doubles. In her most recent professional event, Thandi reached her first professional final, falling in the $10,000 Nashik, India doubles event with Riya Bhatia.

In the ITF Junior Circuit, Thandi is playing the best tennis of her career and recently broke into the Top 100, where she currently stands at No.89. She won the biggest title of her junior career winning a Grade 1 event in Germany two weeks ago, upsetting three seeds. She’s also won a Grade 3 singles event, a Grade 4 doubles event and reached the doubles final at a Grade 2. Her current junior ranking will qualify her for the Grand Slam events should she wish to play.

Thandi also participated in the Fenesta Open, India’s national championships, where she took home the U-18 and Women’s Doubles titles, while finishing as the runner-up in the Women’s Singles. She is ranked No.2 in India’s National U-18 rankings and is the No.3 Indian female junior in the ITF junior rankings. In the WTA rankings, Thandi is No.12 of India’s top singles players and is No.18 in doubles.

Up next for Thandi is the WTA Future Stars Clinic at the Sania Mirza Tennis Academy in Hyderabad, India. Thandi will participate in drills and a Q&A session with Mirza, the No.1 doubles player in the world and WTA Legend Martina Navratilova. The clinic will be done on July 15, 2015 and WTAFinals.com will have all of the action from it. If you would like to follow Thandi and her journey, check out her Facebook page here.
