WTA FUTURE STARS TAKE COURT

The first day of play from the inaugural Junior Road to Singapore is in the books.

The WTA Future Stars U-14 and U-16 Junior Road to Singapore events got underway on Friday at the Kallang Tennis Centre.

Malaysia's Sahana Sofea was among those who won both of her matches.

"I can get more experience against other players from other countries at this tournament," Sofea said. "I'm happy I won both of my matches today. The first match was quite easy; the second one was tough. I was mentally down in the first set, but I got it back in the second set. I hope I can do better in my other matches."

U-16 Pink Group No.1 seed Siqi Cao of China was also in action.

"It was a tough match," Cao said. "I was a little bit distracted in the second set. I didn’t play well in some important points, so I was not happy about that. In the third set, I didn't play as aggressive as in the first two sets, but now I have two wins and I hope I can keep playing my game in the rest of my matches."

The event consists of two groups - pink and purple - with six players in each group for both U-14 and U-16. Each player will play five matches in a round robin singles format. The top finisher in each group will be placed in one semifinal against second place in the opposing semifinal.

The winner of Monday's finals will be presented with the champion's trophy by Li Na.
