Simona Halep won the first Premier Mandatory of her career at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, launching her to the pole position in this week’s Road to Singapore Leaderboard. Halep entered Indian Wells ranked No. 3, but her third title of 2015 put her in first place. Australian Open champion Serena Williams is No. 2, with Melbourne runner-up Maria Sharapova is No. 3. WTA Rising Star Karolina Pliskova is No. 4, while Carla Suarez Navarro rounds out the top 5. Ekaterina Makarova, Timea Bacsinszky and Caroline Wozniacki finish out the Top 8 in this week’s rankings.
The first two months of the season saw Jelena Jankovic win only two of her six matches, but with a runner-up finish at Indian Wells, Jelena Jankovic moves within striking distance of the Top 8.
The doubles draw at the BNP Paribas Open was full of upsets. Playing in their first tournament together Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza dropped only 25 games in five matches en route to the title. The duo will debut at No. 9 of this week’s Leaderboard, which will continue be led by Australian Open champions Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova. Hingis and Mirza, with 1,000 points, are 2 points behind No. 8 Michaella Krajicek and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova. Indian Wells finalists Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina will move up from No. 9 to No. 2 thanks to their stellar play in the California desert.
With a Premier Mandatory in Miami beginning Tuesday, another 1,000 points can dramatically alter the Road to Singapore Leaderboard.Click here for the Singles Road to Singapore Leaderboard and here for the Doubles Road to Singapore Leaderboard
