WTA FINALS LEADS 2014 FAN VIEWERSHIP

Singapore's inaugural year as host of the WTA Finals produced record-breaking television numbers.

Attracting 26.9 million viewers, the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore Presented by SC Global was announced as the single most-watched WTA tournament of the 2014 season. Day 5 in Singapore, highlighted by Serena Williams’ 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) semifinal victory over Caroline Wozniacki, was the most-viewed day of the entire week. The 2014 WTA Finals in Singapore brought brand new features to the year-end event, including a Fan Festival held around the state-of-the-art Sports Hub as well as events throughout the city, the WTA Legends Classic, WTA Rising Stars Invitational and a 14 & Under and 16 & Under WTA Future Stars Junior Road to Singapore. The event attracted over 129,000 fans, including 93,000 attending matches throughout the week, the highest attendance at the WTA Finals since 2000 in Madison Square Garden. The broadcasting and digital footprints from the Finals also produced outstanding numbers, with 177 countries, 63 broadcasters and more than 4,500 hours of coverage reaching almost 500 million homes globally throughout the entire event. In an end-of-season report by SMG Insight, the WTA’s overall audience viewership went up 22.5 percent compared to 2013 numbers. WTA Chairman & CEO, Stacey Allaster plans on raising the bar in 2015, saying: ”Our goal is to deepen the engagement between fans and players by creating greater access to our content, distributing it on TV and digital channels, across mobile platforms and engage with fans on social media. What was so exciting in 2014 was to see how much fans enjoyed watching and engaging with our game.” Additionally it was announced that the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells provided the season’s most-watched day of broadcast for women’s tennis in 2014, while the Miami Open presented by Itau delivered the largest online digital audience of the season.
