Three months into the 2015 season and the Road to Singapore has already traveled through one Grand Slam and some of the WTA’s biggest events – Dubai (Premier 5), Indian Wells and Miami (both Premier Mandatory events).
The singles semifinals at the Miami Open as set. In a rematch of the 2014 WTA Finals championship match, Simona Halep will take on Serena Williams. A match that features the current Road to Singapore No.1 versus the current world No.1.
The Halep-Williams semifinal will decide the Top 2 spots on the RTS Leaderboard with the winner holding the No. 1 spot.
This will be their first meeting since they met last year at the WTA Finals. They were supposed to meet in the semifinals at Indian Wells, but Williams withdrew before the match with a knee injury. At last year’s WTA Finals in Singapore, Halep won their round robin encounter 6-0, 6-2, which was one of the worst losses of Williams’ career in terms of games won. Williams had the final say as she rebounded in the championship match, defeating Halep 6-3, 6-0 to win her fifth WTA Finals trophy. Williams leads the overall head-to-head, 4-1.
The other semifinal will feature Carla Suarez Navarro and Andrea Petkovic squaring off. Suarez Navarro and Petkovic are currently tied 2-2 in their head-to-head, with all of their meetings on hard courts.
Suarez Navarro has a chance to climb as high as No.3 on the RTS Leaderboard, but would need to win the title otherwise Maria Sharapova will hold the No. 3 position. The Spaniard will move up to the No. 4 position if she reaches the final, overtaking WTA Rising Star Karolina Pliskova. A loss in the semifinals will see Suarez Navarro will hold the No.5 spot or drop to No.6 if Petkovic wins the title.
Petkovic’s run to the semifinals will see her move into the Top 10 on the RTS Leaderboard after Miami. She can rise up to No. 6 with a runner-up finish and No. 5 by winning the title.
The winner of the Miami Open receives 1,000 Road to Singapore Leaderboard points, which can bump a player into a comfortable position to qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore present by SG Global.
