RTS: KERBER, MUGURUZA/SUÁREZ NAVARRO INTO TOP 8

Aegon Classic Birmingham provided some upsets, moving a singles player and doubles team into the Top 8 of the Road to Singapore Leaderboards

The Aegon Classic Birmingham, the first Premier tournament of the grass season concluded this past weekend with Angelique Kerber winning her first career grass court title over WTA Rising Star Karolina Pliskova in a third set tiebreak. Meanwhile, Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro won their first title of 2015. Both results launched the champions into the Top 8 on the Road to Singapore Leaderboard, for singles and doubles, respectively.

Serena Williams will enter Wimbledon in first place on the RTS Singles Leaderbaord, with an over-2,000 point lead over No.2 Simona Halep, who fell to WTA Rising Star Kristina Mladenovic in the quarterfinals of Birmingham. Maria Sharapova lands in the No.3 position, just shy of 200 points behind Halep. Suárez Navarro reached her Tour-leading 11th quarterfinal of 2015 in Birmingham and sits at No.4, with Lucie Safarova rounding out the Top 5. Pliskova moved up one spot, overtaking fellow Czech Petra Kvitova and Kerber moved two positions to No.8 with her third Premier title of the year.

In doubles, Bethanie Mattek-Sands/Safarova lead the pack at No.1, with Martina Hingis/Sania Mirza in the No.2 slot. No.3 Mladenovic/Timea Babos hold a small 130 point lead over No.4 Ekaterina Makarova/Elena Vesnina, with Casey Dellacqua/Yaroslava Shvedova holding their ground at No.5. Birmingham runner-ups Andrea Hlavackova/Lucie Hradecka sit at No.6, with WTA Rising Star Caroline Garcia/Katarina Srebotnik and Muguruza/Suárez Navarro finish out the Top 8, who will qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.

The regular grass court season finished this week with the Aegon International Eastbourne in Eastbourne, England. The Premier tournament hosts five Top 10 players, including Caroline Wozniacki, Safarova, Makarova, Suárez Navarro and Kerber, the runner-up to WTA Rising Star Madison Keys last year. Players will hope to grab the 470 points before Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year, begins one week from today.
