Porsche Race to Singapore Update, October 16: Bertens, Larsson eye last doubles spot

With a semifinal showing this week, Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson can clinch the final doubles place at the WTA Finals.

Upon Johanna Konta's withdrawal from the VTB Kremlin Cup, France's Caroline Garcia was confirmed as the final singles qualifier for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, setting the elite eight in the singles bracket.

The Frenchwoman will be making her debut at the WTA Finals in singles next week, rounding out the eight-player field which also consists of Garbiñe Muguruza, Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, Elina Svitolina, Venus Williams, Caroline Wozniacki and Jelena Ostapenko.

However, the doubles field will not be determined until the final week of the regular season this week.

The final doubles qualifying spot is down to two teams – Kiki Bertens and Johanna Larsson, and Shuko Aoyama and Yang Zhaoxuan.

Bertens and Larsson are coming off their third title of the season at the Upper Austria Ladies' Linz last week, and largely control their own destiny for the eighth and final qualifying spot.

Both teams are playing in Luxembourg this week as the top two seeds.

Bertens and Larsson will become the final doubles qualifying team if they reach the Luxembourg semifinals, or upon Aoyama and Yang being eliminated from the draw.

Aoyama and Yang will become the final doubles qualifying team if they win the title, and Bertens and Larsson fail to reach the last four.

Konta will be the first alternate at the WTA Finals, but the second alternate will be decided this week in Moscow as well.

After Svetlana Kuznetsova's withdrawal from Moscow, the second alternate spot will be either Kristina Mladenovic or CoCo Vandeweghe, who are the top two seeds in the singles draw.
