Elina Svitolina captured her second Premier 5 title of 2017 yesterday in Rome - and with it, the lead in the Porsche Race to Singapore in this week's update of the chase to make the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
Already champion in Taipei, Dubai and Istanbul, Svitolina's tour-leading tally of four titles has sent her soaring four places to No.1, displacing Karolina Pliskova. Having only broken the Top 10 in the WTA Rankings in February, the 22-year-old Ukrainian has never previously played in the WTA Finals.
Meanwhile, Rome runner-up Simona Halep continues her clay-court surge up the leaderboard following her second consecutive final, climbing three places to No.5; while semifinalists Kiki Bertens and Garbiñe Muguruza are beginning to make inroads into the higher echelons of the Race, rising 27 spots to No.24 and four spots to No.12 respectively.
The doubles Race also saw a change at the top as Chan Yung-Jan and Martina Hingis extended their winning streak to eight, backing up the Madrid trophy with another title run in Rome to take the top spot in impressive fashion. With three titles under their belts in 2017 - the Taiwanese-Swiss duo were also champions in Indian Wells - Chan and Hingis, who only joined up this year, are proving to be a significant force in doubles.
The Rome runners-up were Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina. Seeking to make their fourth appearance at the WTA Finals to defend their title in Singapore last year, the Russian pair rise one spot to No.3.
