BEIJING OR BUST: 19 COMPETING FOR SIX SINGAPORE SPOTS

A total of 19 players still have a chance to qualify for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global

At the completion of Monday’s play at the China Open, 19 players can still have a chance to qualify for the WTA Finals. Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova are the only two qualifiers for the Finals, leaving six spots up for grabs.

WTA Rising Star Garbiñe Muguruza is on track to qualify for her first WTA Finals in singles and can solidify a slot in Singapore with a quarterfinal showing in Beijing. She opens her China Open campaign against qualifier Irina Falconi in the second round with a potential match against the winner of Belinda Bencic/Mirjana Lucic-Baroni awaiting.

Tuesday’s matchups could mark the end for some players’ hopes at a Singapore bid. Here is a look at how some of the matches will impact the Live RTS Leaderboard:

Flavia Pennetta vs. Teliana Pereira: Entering Monday, less than a 100 points separates Agnieszka Radwanska and Pennetta, the difference of qualifying or being an alternate. Pennetta could add 55 valuable points with a win, creating a bit of a cushion.

Angelique Kerber vs. Dominika Cibulkova: Kerber enters the day at No.6, but only by a narrow margin. With a first round bye, Kerber looks to add 120 points to her total (below).

Samantha Stosur vs. Andrea Petkovic: Although a long-shot to qualify as they would need to win Beijing and more, the loser in this match will be eliminated from contention.

Ana Ivanovic vs. Venus Williams: Ivanovic needs a win to stay in contention for Singapore. Meanwhile, Williams can add 120 points with a win, pushing her into the Top 8.

Others Fighting For Contention: Caroline Wozniacki and Timea Bacsinszky, who face off against Qiang Wang and Mariana Duque-Marino, respectively, need to win tomorrow to keep their Singapore chances alive.
