Johanna Konta jumped three spots to enter the Top 8 (No.8) on the Road to Singapore Leaderboard after reaching her second-ever WTA final at the China Open. Britain's No.1 is bidding to make her first appearance at the season-end WTA Finals in Singapore. Entering this week, Konta holds a 10 point lead over No. 9 Dominika Cibulkova.
A semifinalist at Beijing, Madison Keys has improved her standing on the Leaderboard to No.7. The American, who has accepted a wildcard into the Generali Ladies Linz this week, will also be bidding to make her debut at the year-end finale.
Setting The Stage
The Top 8 players of 2016 will secure a spot at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global which takes place October 23-30, 2016. Angelique Kerber, Serena Williams, Simona Halep, Agnieszka Radwanska and Karolina Pliskova have already qualified for the year-end finale in Singapore with three more spots to be determined.
Eight of the Top 11 in RTS - including all six contending for the finals three spots - are in action this week across three events - Hong Kong, Tianjin and Linz. Here is a round by round look at how this week will affect the WTA Finals qualification:
Who is Next to Qualify?
Currently No.6 on the Leaderboard, Garbiñe Muguruza can secure her spot in Singapore this week by winning the title at Linz. The Spaniard could qualify just by reaching the final, but will need other results falling in her favor. She can also qualify by reaching the final with either Cibulkova not winning the title or Keys losing in the first round.
At this point, that is the only certain qualification that can be formulated. A combination of results could trigger an earlier qualification for Muguruza, and possibly others, so we will need to stay tuned, paying close attention to the daily orders of play at all three events this week.
