Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki
Former World No. 1 Wozniacki and current World No. 1 Serena Williams have a fierce rivalry on court but it is their friendship off the court which remains the envy of many. In an interview with Vogue, Wozniacki described her friendship with Serena with this, “She was really there for me when I needed her the most, and that’s why I think our friendship is so strong now.” When they are sitting together, it is common to see this inseparable pair burst into fits of giggles with full on, eye-crinkling laughter by sharing a joke or two. Animosity between rivals? Certainly not for them!
Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova
They played each other 80 times throughout their careersand with every match, their respect for each other and the bond that they share grow that much more. We will probably not witness a more amazing friendship between two rivals than the one between Navratilova and Evert. They were two of the best players of their generation and they impressed us with their abilities and determination as athletes and individuals. In the documentary ‘Unmatched’, which touchingly captures the bond they share, Evert confides to the camera that Navratilova, at her best, was better than Evert at her best. This fittingly sums up the huge respect that they have for each other bolstered by the rivalry they shared.
Belinda Bencic and Kristina Mladenovic
With the competitiveness of today’s tennis stars, it is rare to see a friendship as close as the one shared by Bencic and Mladenovic. Bencic, in an interview with New York Times, had this to say of her tennis BFF, “You don’t have that often with people, but we just, like, clicked. We have the same interests and sometimes the same thoughts, and off the tennis court.” Ranked 16th and 38th in the world respectively, they practice together, shop together and even go on holidays together. As close as sisters, some might say!
Martina Hingis & Anna Kournikova
“You know somebody’s your friend when you can just pick up where you left off; you don’t have to talk to them every day,” said Kournikova of her friendship with Hingis. These two tennis stars could actually relate better to each other than most can, with both setting foot on the court at a young age and having their breakthroughs in their teens, while facing the media glare. With two Grand Slam doubles titles won at the Australian Open, Hingis referred to their doubles partnership as ‘one of the best part of my career’. With the distinguished career which Hingis has, that certainly speaks volume of the wonderful friendship which they have between them.
