SPANIARDS SET FOR WTA FINALS DEBUT

The foundations for Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro's successful bid for a place at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global were laid on clay.

Muguruza and Suárez Navarro did not team up until Miami but it was not long before they were tasting success, reaching the final of their next tournament, the Mutua Madrid Open.

While there was no fairytale ending in the Spanish capital, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci dashing their title dreams, this momentum carried over into the French Open where they made it through to the semifinals.

This time it was Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, the WTA's other dominant doubles team, that denied them over three reputation-enhancing sets.

After their heroics on the terre battue, Wimbledon was something of an anticlimax and ended in a third round defeat to Andrea Petkovic and Magdalena Rybarikova.

The summer hardcourt season started brightly enough, a title in Stanford underlining their undoubted potential. However, it ended with a whimper, a run of five wins in their next four tournaments culminating with a one-sided loss to the Williams sisters at the US Open.

They confirmed a place at the WTA Finals with strong showings in Asia, making the quarterfinals in Beijing and finishing runners-up in Tokyo.
