The Russians kicked off their 2014 campaign by going all the way to the final at the Australian Open, falling just short against Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci. They were also runners-up a couple of months later in Miami.
Makarova and Vesnina then had a bit of a slump, failing to reach the semifinals at their next seven events. However, they caught fire at the US Open, scoring a quarterfinal win over the Williams sisters and eventually going all the way to the title.
That gave Makarova and Vesnina two Grand Slam titles as a pairing, having also won Roland Garros in 2013, and ensured them a spot in the Singapore field. Makarova will also be an alternate in singles.
In their WTA Finals debut last year in Istanbul, Makarova and Vesnina were runners-up to Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai.
