They have been one of the most productive teams on the WTA the past few years, but one achievement Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears have yet to accomplish is securing a spot in the season finale.
However, fresh off their first WTA title of the season in Birmingham and the ninth of their partnership, Kops-Jones and Spears have to really like their chances this year.
"It's our biggest goal for the year," Kops-Jones said. "It's hard not to think about it because it's everywhere."
The BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global will be held from October 17 to 26, with the doubles competition beginning on October 22.
"It seems like the fifth Grand Slam almost," Spears said. "It's kind of on par with that."
In addition to the aforementioned title, Kops-Jones and Spears' season has included a runner-up showing in Dubai and semifinal outings at Sydney, the Australian Open, Miami and Charleston.
Kops-Jones and Spears came within one win of qualifying for the WTA Championships two years ago when only four teams made up the field, but starting this year there will be eight, and the Americans currently reside in fifth place on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.
"It's great to have more opportunities for teams," Kops-Jones said. "I think teams will stick together more too because they'll have more of a chance to qualify. The more teams you let in, the more competitive it is throughout the year. Maybe one year they'll have 10!"
If they do qualify, Kops-Jones and Spears will relish a visit to Singapore, where the season finale will be held for the first time this year.
"I have never been before," Kops-Jones said. "I have only heard good things about it. I heard it's very clean, is a big city and has a really good tram system."
"I have only heard positive things," Spears said. "I've flown through there and I have definitely looked forward to this for a while."
