The latest highlight of Serena Williams' terrific US hardcourt swing was a title in Cincinnati and an improvement on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.
Serena' Williams WTA-leading fifth title of the season at the Western & Southern Open lifted her a spot from fourth to third on the Road To Singapore leaderboard, as she swapped places with Agnieszka Radwanska.
The Top 8 players on the leaderboard going into the week of October 20 will qualify for the BNP Paribas Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
Williams went into the week of July 28 in sixth place, so without a ton of breathing room in terms of being within the Top 8. However, that week she picked up 470 points by winning Stanford and then the next week 350 points by reaching the semifinals of Montréal and finally 900 points with her latest triumph. In addition to Montréal and Cincinnati, Williams has also won titles this year in Brisbane, Miami and Rome.
Williams now has 4,931 points for the season, trailing just Maria Sharapova, who has 5,335 points, and Simona Halep, who has 5,059. Williams is a four-time champion at the WTA's season finale, having won it in 2001 in Munich, in 2009 in Doha, and in 2012 and 2013 in Istanbul.
The doubles leaderboard saw Cincinnati champions Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears go from fifth place to third. They are seeking to qualify for the season finale for the first time, and appear to have a good chance, with only one of the eight spots clinched so far . Also, Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova went from eighth place to seventh, and Cincinnati runners-up Timea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic went from 12th place to 10th.
