Singapore In Serena's Sights
Serena Williams' WTA-leading fourth title of the season at Stanford improved her from sixth to fourth place on the Road To Singapore leaderboard, giving her a great chance to grab one of the eight qualifying berths available at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
Having previously been victorious in 2014 at Brisbane, Miami and Rome, Williams collected 470 points for her latest title, in the process passing Eugenie Bouchard and Petra Kvitova on the leaderboard. She also has a great chance to soon surpass Li Na for third place, as the Chinese star will miss Montréal, Cincinnati and the US Open with a knee injury.
Williams is a four-time champion at the WTA Finals, winning it in 2001 in Munich, in 2009 in Doha, and in 2012 and 2013 in Istanbul.
Other leaderboard risers of note were Stanford runner-up Angelique Kerber from 10th place to ninth, Stanford semifinalist Andrea Petkovic from 14th to 13th, Stanford quarterfinalist Venus Williams from 24th to 21st and Washington DC champion Svetlana Kuznetsova from 32nd to 23rd.
The Top 10 on the leaderboard are No.1 Maria Sharapova, No.2 Li, No.3 Simona Halep, No.4 Williams, No.5 Bouchard, No.6 Kvitova, No.7 Agnieszka Radwanska, No.8 Ana Ivanovic, No.9 Kerber and No.10 Dominika Cibulkova. All of those players are in action this week in Montréal except Li and Halep.
The biggest move of significance on the doubles leaderboard was Stanford champions Garbiñe Muguruza and Carla Suárez Navarro going from 10th to seventh place. Eight teams will qualify for doubles in Singapore.
