Kvitova Soars Toward Singapore
Wimbledon had major ramifications on the Road To Singapore leaderboard, with the biggest storyline being Petra Kvitova going all the way from No.16 to No.5, which would qualify her for one of the eight coveted spots at the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global if it were held today.
Kvitova hadn't been beyond a WTA semifinal all year, but after capturing her second Wimbledon title in four years she picked up 2,000 points and soared up the standings. Interestingly enough, when she captured her first Wimbledon title in 2011, she went on to win the WTA's season finale later that year.
There was plenty of other movement within the Top 10. Wimbledon semifinalist Simona Halep improved one spot to No.2, runner-up Eugenie Bouchard went from barely qualifying at No.8 to No.4, and quarterfinalist Angelique Kerber ascended from No.11 to No.10.
The Top 8 currently consists of No.1 Maria Sharapova, No.2 Halep, No.3 Li Na, No.4 Bouchard, No.5 Kvitova, No.6 Serena Williams, No.7 Agnieszka Radwanska and No.8 Ana Ivanovic.
Beyond the Top 10, other risers included Lucie Safarova going from No.25 to No.15, Caroline Wozniacki going from No.23 to No.20, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova going from No.40 to No.23, Sabine Lisicki going from No.71 to No.32 and Peng Shuai going from No.50 to No.36.
Three of those in the Top 15 on the leaderboard are in action this week - Halep in Bucharest, and No.12 Sara Errani and No.13 Carla Suárez Navarro in Bad Gastein.
As for doubles, eight teams will qualify for Singapore, and all eight spots remained the same from before Wimbledon. However, Wimbledon winners Errani and Roberta Vinci increased their points lead dramatically atop the leaderboard.
The Italians are followed by No.2 Hsieh Su-Wei and Peng Shuai, No.3 Kveta Peschke and Katarina Srebotnik, No.4 Cara Black and Sania Mirza, No.5 Raquel Kops-Jones and Abigail Spears, No.6 Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, No.7 Anabel Medina Garrigues and Yaroslava Shvedova and No.8 Alla Kudryavtseva and Anastasia Rodionova.
