WTA Finals Approaches
Wednesday, July 9, was exactly 100 days until festivities begin for the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
The 100 Days Countdown included the launching of the countdown clock to the public and the media at the OCBC Bank Center on Chulia Street.
The pre-tournament festivities at the state-of-the-art, $1.3 billion Singapore Sports Hub will begin on October 17, with the tournament itself starting on October 20 and going through October 26. Players will be competing for a record $6.5 million in prize money.
All eight spots in the singles field are still up for grabs, though players such as Simona Halep already look to have a great chance at qualifying. The tournament will also have eight doubles teams qualify for the first time - up from four teams in years past.
In the singles competition, the players will compete in Round Robin group play in two groups. The top two players in each group will face off against one another in the semifinals, and the winners will contest the final. In the doubles competition, the teams will play in a straight knockout format through the final.
In addition to the actual competition, there will be other tennis-related events, including a new WTA Rising Stars Exhibition, which will take place during the opening Fan Festival weekend (October 17-19), as well as the new WTA Legends Exhibition, which will welcome some of the greats of the game back on the court.
First played in 1972, the WTA Finals has been staged in such noteworthy locales as Boca Raton, Los Angeles, New York City, Oakland, Munich, Madrid, Doha and Istanbul. It will be held in Singapore from 2014 to 2018, making this the first time that a city in Asia-Pacific will host the prestigious event.
WTA Finals Ambassador Martina Navratilova has the most titles in event history with eight, followed by Steffi Graf with five and WTA Finals Ambassador Chris Evert and Serena Williams with four each. Navratilova also has the tournament record with 11 doubles titles, 10 of them coming alongside Pam Shriver.
